Trauma is part of life.\u00a0 We all have trauma.\u00a0 Whatever.\u00a0 You\u2019ve just got to suck it up, deal with it as best you can and get on with it.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u2026 Right?<\/p><p>Maybe you\u2019re acquainted with a gearbox, or an engine?\u00a0 Maybe there is someone in your life who has worked with these things and you caught baffling, intricate glimpses here and there?\u00a0 If so, this picture might help you to understand the answers to these two questions: \u201cWhat is dissociation?\u201d\u00a0 And \u201cWhat is the big deal about trauma?\u201d<\/p><p>My dad is a mechanic.\u00a0 He specializes in repairing huge truck gearboxes.\u00a0 And what\u2019s more; he puts a guarantee on them.\u00a0 They have to be good as new when he\u2019s done with them.\u00a0 He\u2019s got to work perfectly. Time and time again I saw his organized, competent hands, opening up the casing of the gearbox, taking out the main shaft with all its gears. I watched him take it all apart, wash each part with care, getting rid of all the grease and oil.<\/p><p>He would pack them out, neatly organized on a cloth, and then he would hold up a gear, run his finger over a battered segment and say, \u201cSee, Ruth.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0237b8 e-con-full e-flex wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a0237b8\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0ce80b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0ce80b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is the 6<sup>th<\/sup> gear.\u00a0 See, it was damaged here?\u00a0 Feel it.\u201d\u00a0 And I would run my finger over the smallish segments with little chips missing.\u00a0 \u201cThis is why it kept jumping out of sixth when the truck was driving\u201d, he would continue explaining.\u00a0<\/p><p>Or another time when I went to visit him at the workshop and he held up a main shaft, broken clean off!\u00a0 \u201cWhat kind of action caused so much damage!\u201d\u00a0 I wondered, mildly shocked at the broken metal.\u00a0 The gears were totally wrecked.\u00a0 Yet he repaired it.\u00a0 One part at a time.\u00a0 Reassembled it and handed the gearbox back to its owner with a guarantee.\u00a0 Working perfectly again.\u00a0 What amazing workmanship!<\/p><p>Now back to our questions: we\u2019re not talking about an engine, or a gearbox.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to catch a glimpse of our souls \u2013 that inner essence of who we are that we never can see, but that many of us wonder and theorize about.<\/p><p>There are answers to be found, though.\u00a0 We get them from the very Creator Himself.\u00a0 The One who made us and who understands our inner workings more perfectly than any expert workman ever can.\u00a0 He told us all we need to know in His Word.\u00a0 Let us look at just one Bible passage for well.<\/em><\/p><p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><em>My frame was not hidden from You,<\/em><em><br \/>When I was made in the secret place,<br \/>And skilfully woven together in the lowest parts of the data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Verse fifteen is talking about our physical body (my frame) and \u201cthe secret place\u201d and \u201clowest parts of the earth\u201d are euphemisms for the womb.\u00a0 Looking at the structure of our tissue magnified under a microscope, we find that our tissue literally is \u201cwoven together\u201d!\u00a0<\/p><p>And then, back to verse 13: \u201cYou formed our inward parts\u201d This refers not to organs, which are part of our physical bodies.\u00a0 No, it refers to something much more profoundly important: our souls!\u00a0 That mysterious inner part of us that is not observable in any laboratory.\u00a0 Where we can only grope around and try to understand what goes wrong and how to get it fixed, hoping we\u2019re somehow helping and not getting it all wrong.\u00a0<\/p><p>Let\u2019s go back to the gearbox of a big truck now: see all those intricate gears and parts?\u00a0 Every nut and bolt, even the gaskets that seal everything up?\u00a0 Our souls can be compared to that, but so much more complex and intricate that only God can ever fully understand how these \u201cinward parts\u201d function and fit together.\u00a0<\/p><p>And what is trauma?\u00a0 Trauma is damage.\u00a0 Like that sixth gear with the little chips of metal broken off.\u00a0 We can ignore it and just \u201cget on with it\u201d so to speak.\u00a0 But every time we have to use sixth gear, it will grind and slip and not function well.\u00a0 It will instead, break more and more.\u00a0 This trauma might be as common as your parents who got divorced, or your dad who loved your brother more than he loved you.\u00a0 And you will find, when you want to engage with your own husband, or wife, your own kids, that you have issues.\u00a0 You\u2019re struggling.\u00a0 It is just not going as well as you had expected, because well: the part of you that does that job is damaged and can\u2019t work as it should.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30e309a e-con-full e-flex wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no e-con e-child\" data-id=\"30e309a\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-47862e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"47862e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>What then is \u201cdissociation\u201d?\u00a0 In short: it is when one of those inward parts has broken loose and is completely out of place, not able to function as it should at all!\u00a0 How does this happen?\u00a0 When we experience trauma during early childhood, as we all inevitably do in this fallen world we live in, and we don\u2019t have the emotional maturity and capacity to handle what is happening to us, we dissociate it.<\/p><p>This means that we cut that traumatic experience off and store it in a part of us, which bears that information for us, so that we don\u2019t have to keep dealing with the unacceptably negative emotions caused by the trauma.\u00a0 We can then, \u201cget on with it\u201d but those unresolved emotions caused by the trauma are still there, and whenever that part of us is called upon to play its part in the normal course of our lives, various degrees of havoc unfold:\u00a0<\/p><p>We may be totally unreasonable, immature, emotionally triggered, illogical, compulsive, in short: not functioning as we should in those situations at all.\u00a0 And it happens over and over again.\u00a0 We can\u2019t seem to break out of it.
